"Robotic assisted prostate surgery"

About: Churchill Hospital

Robotic assisted prostate surgery 25 Oct 2014 The day after my operation I was visited on a regular basis & nurses checked oxygen, levels & heart rate regularly. I had the impression a number of nurses were not fully aware of the type of surgery or had not read their notes. A night nurse on Monday morning had to change a drain dressing and the consultant visited early Monday. After that I felt neither respect or concern from most nurses, & no-one appeared to know what medication or dressings I needed to take home. Luckily I had taken notes from the consultant. When finally discharged by a student nurse taking off final dressings I was not given any personalised documentation as to treating the wounds or how to reapply the drain dressing. I appreciate there must be many hand-over points on a Monday morning, however the cooperation and poor communication process on Monday, in my case, was sadly lacking Having a business and IT background - I reckon a more robust level of communication about post operative care is required before, during and after the operation not just about medication but also dealing with sanitary arrangements in the various stage of recovery

Thank you for your comments regarding your care on the Urology ward at the Churchill Hospital and for taking the time to tell us how we can improve our care to patients. I am sorry that the standard of communication about post operative care was lacking and that you felt the nurses showed a lack of concern about you. Your feedback will be passed on to the staff responsible for your care. Should you wish to contact the Trust directly with any further comments or concerns please do not hesitate to contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS), on 01865 221473 or at palsjr@ouh.nhs.uk, and a PALS Officer will be happy to help.
