"Lack of medical advice may result in some loss of sight"

About: George Eliot Hospital - Acute Services / Ophthalmology University Hospital (Coventry) / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

Background:

Attended opticians on in August due to issues with my eyes (black spots in right eye and blurring in left eye).   The optician examined my eyes and made a referral to my family practice for cataract procedure

Family practice passed referral to George Elliot Hospital and appointment made for mid October

Attended local GP surgery 2nd week of September complaining of deterioration in eye sight in right eye (Floaters and severe black spots) and requested  prioritization in attendance at George Elliot. It was stated by the GP that the timeframe  (described process) to go back to the Opticians and making another request to the hospital would be close to the confirmed appointment time.

Telephoned the George Elliot hospital and expressed concerns about the deterioration in my right eye and was repeatedly told that there was limited clinics available and any concerns would be looked at during the planned consultation.    Was advised that if I was unduly concerned I should ring daily for any appointment cancellations

Telephoned daily and got a cancellation for the end of sept for the One Stop Cataract clinic

Due to concerns about right eye I was put through to specialist nurses (described symptoms in right eye which had progressively worsened) and was told that limited clinics were available and the eye would be looked at during the planned appointment.

Attended Cataract clinic and on consultation with the doctor a detached retina was diagnosed in the right eye. Focus of the staff was on the left eye cataract referral despite my concerns raised by myself about my right eye.

The Consultant stated that the delay could result in some permanent sight loss in my right eye as a result of the delay in treatment. Faxed over patient details to Coventry University Hospital

Notified by Coventry Hospital of a planned appointment at the beginning of Oct with Mr Hero.

Attended planned appointment with Mr Hero and was scheduled for surgery on the next day. Again advised the delay could result in some loss of sight in my right eye

Surgery completed with follow-up review appointments and further surgery planned. Awaiting results to know the extent of & loss of sight in right eye.
