"QE hospital - Must do better"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Gateshead)

(as a relative),

A close relative has spent several stays in the hospital.

During my visits, I noted:

1 Medication not given regularly

2 One antibiotic IV drip placed on the stand but never connected and eventually wasted.

3 Some nurses can forget to return to carry out tasks that they have been asked to do. I feel that this is probably due to their workload.

4 My relative felt that the food was a disgrace, and found much of it inedible. I think managers should be made to eat nothing but hospital food for seven days and see what it is like.

3 In my relative’s experience, they are unable to cater for special dietary requirements. If they haven't got anything suitable, you go without.

4 Cleaners do not seem to clean thoroughly. It appeared very cursory and stains were often left untouched.

5 Sister is so busy dealing with patients, she seems to have no time to supervise her nurses

6 After leaving this hospital my relative now has clostridium difficile and is being treated in another hospital and hopes never to return to the QE.

I think managers should forget their targets and get out onto the wards and see what is going on. In my opinion, if they can't run an important hospital better than this, they should be replaced by somebody who can.
