"Very poor postnatal care"

About: Homerton University Hospital

Although the labour wasn't ideal (my wife was cared for by a relief midwife from another hospital who knew where nothing was), my wife had extremely poor postnatal care. The midwives appeared not to have enough time to be friendly (although at various times I saw them on Facebook on their phones and other sites buying train tickets!). The communication between staff was poor and we ended up being discharged at five minutes to midnight despite being told all day that we were going to be discharged- far from ideal with a week old baby. At one point when we reminded a midwife that we had been waiting to be discharged for hours she said 'you aren't discharged until I say so'- really unprofessional. When we were first readmitted we we're told about getting a family room- we asked about this on numerous occasions but no one even found out for us. Interestingly, a fellow midwife was admitted to the bed opposite us and was given a family room right away. We found that the service by the consultants and doctors was generally very good but the midwives on the postnatal ward really were poor. My mum visited us and she has been working for the NHS for over 30 years- she couldn't believe how poor the service was. It's now been almost 2 weeks since we were discharged and I've been too angry to write anything. The crux of the issue is communication, there was no continuity with the midwives and we had to explain everything that had happened multiple times during the day. I certainly wouldn't recommend Homerton to friends, family or anyone who's having a baby, the staff are not well trained and they don't have the resources to deal with the heavy workload.
