"Suspected blood clot after surgical procedure"

About: Charing Cross Hospital / Vascular surgery Harmoni / NHS 111

(as the patient),

After having Endovenous Laser Therapy in my leg, I started to get a very hot painful lump in my calf approx. 4 days later. My Sister had previously been critically ill with two pulmonary embollisms (again called 111 whose fast action saved her life) and I was particularly worried about developing the same.

The pain grew as did the swelling and lump so I called 111 for advice. They suspected ThromboPhlebitis from my description over the phone, but with my family history, wanted to make sure. They advised me that a Doctor would attend my home. I called a friend who lived close by to come around as I was worried and the Dr. came just after the friend in under 30 minutes!

He duly confirmed it was indeed Thrombo Phlebitis, a surface clot that is not the same threat at all, but not before checking my temps. , my pulse, and examining the area. Unbelievably, my Surgeon also called and confirmed it did indeed sound like Thrombo phlebitis and I should not worry as it should dissipate within 10 days. The Doctor prescribed painkillers and anti-inflammatories and advised me to elevate my leg with a cold compress. He was brilliant. Friendly, professional and totally allayed my fears. It was a huge relief. The following day I contacted my GP who left a script for anti-inflammatories for me to continue the treatment. Within a fortnight, my leg was fine.
