"Horrible staff!"

About: Broomfield Hospital

I've stayed as an inpatient at Broomfield numerous times and I regularly see various consultants for an ongoing health condition. I find the facilities and the food good, but the staff have really let me down on several occasions. (This will be a major rant I'm afraid!) Every consultant I have seen has kept me waiting for at least 30 mins (up to 3 hours sometimes) and then has only spent 5 minutes with me. I'm not involved in any decisions about my care, the requests I make for valuable treatments are usually ignored and as such I've been in pain for most of the last year without any treatment. My consultants never communicate with each other, they both tell me different things and always claim that they haven't heard from each other. What's worse is that they disregard what I say and inaccurately represent my condition in my clinical notes! (I.e. my severe daily headaches and visual disturbances I seeked help for got downgraded to 'occassional headaches and no visual symptoms' in my GPs letter). I've also had some issues with inpatient treatment. I attended a day ward for my 2nd lumbar puncture a while back and had a horrible experience. My first one was done with 2 experienced doctors and a nurse present in a proper hospital bed, however this one was performed in an exam room by just 1 untrained doctor who kept dropping the needle & meter while it was in my spine and jerking it around, ultimately he had to ask for my partners help with the procedure and I ended up with an inaccurate pressure reading. I was then left in the room for 3 hours and wasn't checked by any of the staff (I was checked regularly with my first one as I'm required to lie flat and not move afterwards). Eventually they came by and said they forgot I was there and sent me home without being checked over or discharged properly. I subsequently suffered major complications and was unable to walk for over a month, meaning I had to be hospitalised a few days later and was in excruciating pain for a very long time. The doctor who performed my procedure also left my notes lying around where anyone could access them, my partner found them when he was walking around so we gave them in at the nurses station and were later told they had been lost completely. While I've had overnight stays in hospital I do have to say that I've found all of the nurses very pleasant, they've been a lot more attentive and friendly than the doctors I've seen and I haven't got any complaints there. My only issue would be that I've been left a long time without any pain relief on a few occasions when nurses were busy, but not so long that it's been a major issue. Overall, I'd never recommend Broomfield to anyone. I've since been transferred to Cambridge for my condition as I understand they have more experience with this and are able to handle it much better. Who knows, I may have just had bad luck with Broomfield but I'm hoping for a better experience elsewhere!
