"I would prefer not to be put on an older person's ward"

About: Cheltenham General Hospital / General surgery Gloucestershire Royal Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I have been a patient in Cheltenham General on numerous occasions due to lung disease, and for the most part I cannot fault the nursing staff. I do however object to the state of the place cleanliness wise, the food is and was terrible. The ward I was on Guiting, is not the best of wards I have to admit. It’s an older person’s ward, so people seem to die there regularly. Due to the nature of my disease, it is 9 times out of 10 usually elderly people that have it, and me being a youngish guy, ok mid 30s lol, it does my confidence no good at all people dying around me more or less everyday. I do wish that when I go in again, they would put me on a ward with people my own age. I realise that bed space is a premium in these places, but it should be possible. Gloucester Royal Hospital on the other hand is fantastic, they have separate wards and do take the persons age into account when giving them a bed. I have been in there almost as many times as Cheltenham and have never been placed on the same ward twice. Also the food and cleanliness are second to none.

These hospitals are only 10 miles apart, but in my experience, Cheltenham General is not a patch on Gloucester. Maybe Cheltenham General should look more at how Gloucester do some of these things and take a leaf out of their book.
