"All but labour was pretty rubbish"

About: Birmingham Women's Hospital

I gave birth to two children in your hospital: in feb 2009 and jul 2013. Both experiences are very similar. Antenatal care is good except the ridiculous waiting times of over 4-5 hours at a time. How can there be plenty of nurses walking around and chatting but a 2-3 hour queue to have blood taken. Waiting to see consultants is ok but bloods are not a rocket science really. Care on the wards is basic. I was lucky with my first child as found a midwife on the night shift very helpful and eager to assist. With my second child unfortunately i wasnt that lucky. I was left to take a shower without anyone having an eye on my daughter which was one of the most stressful and frightening experiences of all. Delivery/labour itself was great in both instances however most of the decisions were made without consulting me. But they were good decisions so i cant really complain. I was listened when i requested 'no forceps' and alternative methods were used. The care in delivery suits and theatre was second to none. Would be nice if a bit more time was given to mum just to be there with their babies as ward is not 'private' space. I had loads of 'me and baby' time with first one but almost none with the second which may have contributed to bonding difficulties i experienced. Food was good, and cleanliness of facilities was great.
