After many years with nasal polyps, the steroid spray used to control them stopped working. As a result, my nose became almost completely blocked. I had no sense of smell or taste, couldn't sleep, had nasty headaches, excessive eye watering etc. I had a couple of courses of oral steroids but they only gave me a few days relief at a time. I came in on 11th October as a day case to have the polyps removed. A short procedure then home later in the day. It didn't work out like that. The consultant decided that I was in need of more comprehensive surgery and after discussing the details and the risks involved, I underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery and an overnight stay in Ward 7. I started to feel better as soon as I was in the Ward. The feeling of pressure in my nose had gone and breathing was easier. The quality of nursing care I received was excellent: frequent monitoring of my condition including pain control. As it turned out, I had no post-operative pain, very little discomfort and was able to eat and drink without any difficulty. I was discharged with medicines and given a comprehensive briefing on their use and what to do if I had any problems. Five days after the operation my sense of smell and taste started to come back. I can breathe through my nose and get some sleep. My eyes have stopped running and I no longer have to drag myself through every day. I am very grateful for the quality of care I have received throughout the whole process, right the way through from my GP, clinics at Loughborough Hospital, pre-op assessment at LRI, kind and considerate treatment on the Day Ward, the surgeon, the theatre team and the lovely people of Ward 7. I am saddened by the sustained criticism of the NHS which is going on at the moment, much of it, I suspect, politically motivated. I have had exemplary treatment from people who exhibit calm professionalism with a caring attitude. Thank you so much.
