"Highly insensitive gynecology department"

About: Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital

I was diagnosed with endometriosis in July and I was appalled at the fact that women with gynecological problems are made to wait to see a consultant in the same area as pregnant women waiting for their scans. I have to come to terms with the fact that I may have problems conceiving, at a time when I desperately want a baby. Yet Basingstoke hospital makes me wait for an appointment to discuss these issues in a room that is completely geared towards pregnant women. All the magazines available to read were about babies or parenting, the walls were covered in posters to do with pregnancy, and there was even a television on the wall advertising baby related products such as cots. And to add to this, just about every other woman in the waiting room was pregnant and several knew each other and were chatting excitedly about their pregnancies. I'm not suggesting that pregnant women should be hidden away from those facing fertility problems, but I think it's extremely insensitive to combine these waiting areas, and to not provide any information in the waiting area for women with gynecological problems. Even a magazine that I could have read would have helped. Endometriosis is a condition that affects one in 10 women, and this waiting room is the first place a woman suspected of suffering from the illness will go. Yet there are no advice leaflets provided, no information about support groups, nothing whatsoever. It's appalling.
