"Dermatology waiting list"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Dermatology (Skin Conditions)

(as the patient),

I am actually yet to see the Dermatology unit, due to the fact that I have been referred on two separate occasions and I am still waiting for an appointment.

I have called the Dermatology unit a handful of times now to see if there has been any progress, and up until now only once have I spoken to someone who is remotely pleasant. The majority of the time I have dealt with someone who does not appear to want to help or advise on anything. It's extremely disheartening and really makes it very difficult to believe that we should be defending our NHS system when this is the type of response you get from the staff.

I have been told different stories each time I call. Firstly that I wasn't far from being given an appointment. Next that I was extremely far from being given an appointment. I was then told on a different occasion that there is currently a 26 weeks waiting time, and that at that time I was sitting at 21 weeks so I should call back at the 26 weeks mark if I hadn't heard anything.

Today I called back, being that I have now been waiting for 7 and a half months, and was instructed again that there is a 6 months wait and I will just have to wait. When I tried to explain that I have already been waiting 7 and a half months I was told again that there was a 6 months wait and I will be contacted after then.

As I explained, I have not even seen the inside of the Dermatology clinic and I am already mortified by the service that has (not) been provided. Should I wait for 24 months before I dare to call and check on my appointment again?

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback. It is disappointing that you have found any of our staff to be unhelpful when you have made enquiries about your referral. With regard to your wait, if you would like to get in touch to provide more detail, this would enable us to look more specifically at your case and to provide you with the information you seek. I can be contacted by email loldoyd@nhs.net or telephone 01224 558449. In the meatime, your comments will be passed on to the service concerned.

Dear Stewart123

NHS Grampian apologises for your wait and accepts that waiting times for dermatology are outside the 12 week target. We are working hard to find solutions to this and have introduced weekend and evening clinics to help address the backlog. Our Out-patient Manager, Rachel McHugh, would be very pleased to help you and would be able to tell you approximately when you can expect to be seen. You can contact her by calling:

01224 551577

With regard to the attitude of our staff, NHS Grampian again apologises. We do make every effort to be polite and helpful at all times and are sorry that this has not been your experience.
