"turned my life around for the better"

About: Rampton Hospital

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

Being at Rampton has helped me a lot. Even though I’ve only been here for 9 month, it’s helped me turn my life round for the better. Yeah, I still have my bad days, but thanks for the time and effort put in by nursing staff, these times are becoming less often. Before I came here, every where else I’ve been has just tried to contain me and my behaviours, but everyone here is trying to understand me and the reasons why I behave the way I do. I’m glad to say, no-one here at Rampton has ever judged me or tried to patronise me or tried to minimise what I’ve been though. They’ve helped me gain a understanding of myself and my difficulties. Without the help I’ve received since being on Topaz, I didn’t think I’d have been able to change as much as I have. Before I felt that people didn’t understand me and didn’t want to help me, but that’s different here. I know that I’m going to get all of the right help and support here and eventually when I get out, I won’t need the use of high secure again. Before I come here, I was so low, so helpless, and so suicidal but after a few months here people made me believe that I’ve got a lot to live for. The way they deal with me and the other patients is fantastic, they give everyone the time that they deserve. They don’t accept violence and aggression and the way they deal with difficult situations is like some thing I’ve never seen before. Even after a tough time, they still have loads of time for you, they never judge you, hate you or think any differently of you. There just a great bunch of staff to have supporting you!

Thank you so much for having the courage to write such a positive message about your experiences of being a patient on Topaz ward. It is always great to hear about women like you being able to come through the difficult times believing things can be different for them in the future. I am glad you have found you are able to see a difference for yourself and value the way you work with the staff to help you get there.

It sounds like being treated compassionately has helped you to be more compassionate towards yourself. Once again thanks for sharing your experiences with others.
