What started at my doctor’s surgery here in Southwold, back in early November, with a small lump on my neck, was referred within the day to JPUH. After X-ray and MRI Scans in November I was referred to ENT in James Paget Hospital on 02.12.13. After various checks and balances, culminating in a day-care operation in my throat on 06.01.14 at JPUH, I am then referred to your Hospital. January 15th sees me having a RIG inserted and a PET Scan; all amazing stuff with continuous care, consultation and consideration at its highest level ! Cutting a long story short, February saw me fitted for a mask, and an introduction / alignment process for the forthcoming radiography. Six weeks of February and March saw me in your hospital every day each week and who can I thank the most for my care ? The consultant and staff and the most excellent Day Care unit at JPUH ? The welcome, help and assistance of the receptionists at The Colney Centre ? The staff in the Haematology department for weekly blood checks; always there; no waiting; always a smile with a needle? The hard-pressed day and night staff in Mulbarton Ward who made me feel so special when I felt so awful? The nursing staff and doctors and the carers in Chemotherapy in Weybourne Day Unit not, one or twice, but every Monday that they treated me with chemotherapy? The radiotherapy staff in LINAC 1 putting up with me and reassuring me when my nerves gave out? The PET Scan staff on both occasions; so matter-of-fact and so caring? The near-constant constructive and helpful reassurances from the staff in the weekly check-up sessions and the subsequent review meetings ? It seems today to be very easy to snipe and swipe at the NHS through politicians and the newspapers, as well as national and local television and radio news. Statistics here, statistics there; meeting targets or not; there is a temptation for those not directly involved to criticize nearly to the point of self-destruction ! However, let me end by saying that I hope never to go through another 12 month period like this last one being so reliant upon the NHS, but if I have to, then I can only hope that it is the care of any or all of the staff at NNUH and JPUH. Impossible to write to each and everyone that I have encountered, and who has helped me with kind words, reassurance and understanding, but if you have the wherewithal, then please extend my thanks and gratitude to all of those in, and involved with, The Colney Centre of which you must all be very, very proud,
