"Breast Cancer Surgery"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Gateshead)

I attended the Peter Smith Surgery Centre on 26th September for a lumpectomy and removal of lymph nodes to treat my breast cancer. We were all checked in at the same time, 7.45 and then taken to the privacy of individual cubicles called 'pods'. I had an additional procedure to do which involved walking a considerable distance back to the breast screening centre wearing two gowns and some of my own clothing to preserve my dignity. At all times the staff treated me with the utmost respect and good humour. My surgery was scheduled for the afternoon, which was a little disappointing and could have added to anxiety levels. However, this was clearly communicated to me which meant that I could text my family and tell them not to be concerned if they didn't hear anything before mid to late afternoon. I was given cosy warm blankets to make my wait in the pod more comfortable. Following my surgery, I was served the most delicious tea and toast I have ever had (admittedly, I was starving by then ;-) ) At all times the staff were calm, polite, friendly and, given the circumstances, I could not have wished for a better experience. I am SO grateful that we have such an efficient service in our area. Hats off and many thanks to the whole surgical team!!! :-)

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave such positive feedback for the hospital, and we're glad to hear your experience was such a good one. We'll be sure to pass it along to the teams involved, who we know are always keen to hear back from patients.
