"Very worrying"

About: Lister Hospital

My Mother was recently in hospital very poorly, A&E staff brilliant, then transferred to the CDU unit. One trained nurse the rest agency HCA's and oh dear that was when it went down hill. One HCA to look after 4 patients, speaking to the other HCA in their language, whilst changing and turning patients. Mobiles turned on and answering text messages, phones on charge actually on the ward. You see we never left my mother for 48 hours whilst she was in A&E, we were vigilant and they knew we were trained nurses. I looked after my Mother, but there was no care plan, no fluid balance chart and she wasn't admitted to the ward. When I asked the HCA, about fluids for the other old lady in the bay, she said she wont take it from us, only from her son. He came in at 6 and left at 7, no fluids given by him, so for 9 hours she was not given any fluids at all nor her meal, then dramatically a stretcher arrived, to take her home, yes home, a bed bound women, to be looked after by visiting carers. I was seething with anger, then the night staff didn't know my mum had dementia and I had to tell her she needs turning 3 hrly, she cannot turn herself and needs patience when giving her a drink from a tepee cup. I made sure all her meds were given, her IV functioning properly, nebulised, changed and turned before I left. I've was adamant, she was coming home the next day. When I was dressing her, she smelt of urine and sweat, no way had she been washed. I was so pleased to get her back home. Not once did anyone ask me about my mothers needs as a dementia patient, with no speech, no ability to turn herself and no one to advocate for her. Praise to the paramedic and crew that attended, brillant. People be afraid, very afraid.

Whilst pleased to see you felt your mother's care in the Lister's emergency department was good, we were concerned to read about what happened in CDU as this should not have happened. We would like to have this investigated - we wonder if you would be willing to email us at generalenquiries.enh-tr@nhs.net so we can follow this up with you directly?
