"Concern about some night nurses on Hawthorn ward"

About: University Hospital Lewisham

(as the patient),

I have to complain about Lewisham hospital. I was admitted to hawthorn ward on 24.3.09. I was in bed area thirteen to sixteen. The ward was often a shambles. But my concern is about some of the night staff on this ward. I was admitted because I was in pain from Arthritis, and I could not walk without pain. I wanted to go to the toilet and asked a nurse if she would help me get out of bed. She shouted at me and told me to put my feet onto the floor. I told her that I did not think she was a good nurse with her attitude. There were two older ladies in my ward and they were treated without respect. Shouted at for asking for a commode. This same nurse was responsible for this. But what got me the most was that some of the staff put the call controls away, so that the ladies could not get to them. I was forever pressing my call control to get the nurses attention. Eventually a nurse would come in po-faced and ask what I wanted. Other times, when the ladies did call them, they were ignored and had to sit almost wetting themselves until one of the nurses came. Though, not all the night staff were bad. One young man named Martin bent over backwards to be kind. He is how a nurse should act. Another was a Chinese nurse who was also kind. None of the end of bed hand clean bottles were filled. What with MRSA an issue, I would have thought it was important to keep them working. None of the tables where our food was served was wiped down after every meal. It was a disgrace.
