"In my experience, Coventry has the best eye department in the UK"

About: University Hospital (Coventry) / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

I was diagnosed at Moorfields eye hospital in London as having 'Fuchs Heterochromic Iridocyclitis' after an uncorrected lazy eye as a child and cataracts 10 years previously. The doctors at Moorfields were professional, but did not seem to show any care, making me wait for 2 hours, then seeing me for 3 minutes, before waving me away and mumbling something about a 6 week appointment.

Then I moved to Warwickshire, and my notes were transferred to the old Paybody unit in Coventry. After a diagnosis of secondary glaucoma, I was transferred to the care of Mrs Robinson - this was during the transitionary period between the old hospital closing and the new eye dept opening at Walsgrave, and what a difference from the cold, robotic treatment I had received at Moorfields.

I was immediately given a wide ranging battery of tests, and the care under Mrs Robinson and her supporting staff was second to none. This lady makes it her own personal mission to see that you are either cured or at least made as comfortable as possible. Never before had I met a doctor so in tune with her patient's needs. The nurses in this department are incredible; one that stands out for me is a lady who goes by the name 'Jay' who goes out of her way to make you feel important.

When it was decided that my eye should be removed, I was transferred to the care of Mr Ahluwalia. I was sad to leave the care of Mrs Robinson as I knew I was getting the finest treatment the NHS has to offer, but as soon as I attended my first clinic with Mr Ahluwalia, I knew that I was in safe hands, and that the standard of care would not be slipping. He and his staff have all treated me with the utmost care, respect and sympathy, and have carried out the evisceration procedure to perfection in my humble opinion.

All in all, I have never had a single moment when I have wanted to complain about the service from this department. From the consultants to the receptionists, all the staff are polite, courteous, professional and friendly. When I go for my regular appointments, I feel like I am visiting old friends.

Moorfields has the reputation for being the best eye hospital in the world, but unlike them, this fine Coventry hospital has never lost my notes, never given me cause to complain about a rude receptionist, and never coldly asked me to take a ticket and wait until my number is called.

Congratulations on being the best.
