"Lack Of Organisation"

I was taken to RSH on a Sunday night with severe abdominal pain, a home visit from my GP initiated this. I arrived at about 11.30 pm and was not seen by a doctor for at least a couple of hours. He said I would need an x ray to investigate further and possibly a ct scan. At 8 am the next morning I was taken for an x ray and about 10.30 some 2 1/2 hours later a doctor came and said they would be sending me home as they saw nothing in the x ray. I returned to my GP the following day still suffering with pain and She immediately told me I would have to return to hospital as she suspected diverticulitis . She called the RSH and they phoned me back and said to be there for 3pm that afternoon for a ct scan. I arrived at 2.45 and had to wait until 5 pm to be seen by the nurse who does the initial booking in and seen by a doctor some 30 minutes later. He told me that the ct scan would not be done that day as the staff had all gone home. I was a bit miffed at that, seeing as the hospital had told me to be there for 3pm. He (the consultant" got rather sarcastic and arrogant with me which didn't sit well, but as always in cases like this we (the patient) don't have many options. It wasn't until Thursday of that week when they did the ct scan and up until then, no-one did anything to help or discuss anything with me apart from the obs and asking if I wanted paracetamol. I wasn't given a pillow until Wednesday I had to use a folded towel as a pillow ...really ! I felt as if I was being completely shunned by staff and doctors, a most uncomfortable feeling when you are not well and in pain. I went almost 17 hours without food because they couldn't tell when I was going for this scan. When a doctor came to tell me the results of the ct scan he was very off hand and offered no explanation other than the medical diagnosis, he offered no advice on diet or future problems, it was almost as if he couldn't get away fast enough. Eventually the medication came back from the pharmacy some 2 - 3 hours later and I was allowed to leave. Overall the care I received took about 40 minutes to minister and I was in hospital for about 4 days including the initial Sunday. The nurses themselves were polite but not particularly friendly and the nightshift staff were very noisy throughout the nights, laughing and carrying on at the nurses station with total disregard to the patients. Whilst I'm not saying they should be totally quiet I think a modicum of quietness is entitled to patients who are trying to rest. Organization is pretty low in my opinion and 4 days for 40 minutes of treatment is wrong, and puts patients in a frame of mind that is not conducive to getting well. With better organization treatments would be more swiftly and cheaper. Consultants may be classed as gods in the hospital but should still be respectful to patients. Nightshift scanning staff would be a good idea
