"Smoking Policy at Ninewells"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Respiratory Medicine

(as a parent/guardian),

I was leaving Ninewells Hospital with my son who is an asthma sufferer. Each time I leave the front door there is a gaggle of patients, visitors and maybe staff right outside smoking away.

Let me be clear, this is supposed to be no smoking areas. Last night was the worst though as, when I left, not only were there the usual smokers but there was a person who looked likey they were smoking a joint. I found this quite outrageous. It's bad enough that nothing is done about the smoking but to also do nothing about this is worse.

Dear SAT,

thank you for taking the time to contact us through Patient Opinion. Please let me take this opportunity to apologise for the distress that this experience has caused you and your son. NHS Tayside fully recognise the importance of ensuring a clean and healthy environment for our patients, visitors and staff and the risks associated with passive smoking. NHS Tayside are currently reviewing the existing Smoking Policy which aims to go beyond the requirement of the national legislation in order to maximise the benefits of the smoke-free agenda.

Clearly the issues that you have highlighted are very concerning, and Mr Ken Armstrong, Director of Operations, would welcome a further conversation to understand the specific detail. He can be contacted via feedback.tayside@nhs.net

Kind regards,

Caroline McQuillian
