"Phlebotomy did not notify me of abnormal test..."

About: Bristol Royal Infirmary

I went to the BRI for a walk-in blood test and was told the results would be back for the week after. I was very surprised not to hear back about them despite how unwell I have been feeling and the GP practice I was registered with at the time told me they did not have them, even when it was two weeks after the test. When I moved practices again I found that my results dating back to the time I went to the BRI walk in blood test three weeks ago, were abnormal, yet I wasn't told about these. I can't help but feel a little annoyed at how I've been asked to wait yet my results were abnormal. I will not be using your service again BRI.

Thank you for your feedback - we have also responded to your comment about this issue on 17/9/2014. We are sorry that you have had this experience and are concerned to hear that you did not receive your abnormal results in good time. It is very difficult to be sure exactly what has occurred without carrying out a proper investigation: we would very much like the opportunity to do this and would be grateful if you could contact our Patient Support and Complaints Team to initiate this (0117 342 3604 / pals@uhbristol.nhs.uk). We have though contacted the Pathology Lab for a general discussion about the issues that you have raised. They have advised that a patient's blood test results are usually available on the system the same day or the next for GPs to view. Furthermore, most GPs have an arrangement whereby any abnormal or urgent blood test results are phoned through directly to the practice. It sounds as if you changed GP practice at around the time of having the blood tests, in which case it would have been your former GP practice's responsibility to update the system to ensure that the results were sent to the new GP. Thank you again for your feedback and we hope to hear from you soon so that we can look into this further.
