"Birch Ward/EAU"

My Mother was recently very well cared for in this ward. She is 90 years old and was returned to pretty good health in less than 24 hours. Her local GP had decided that she would be better left in situ. to take her chances with dehydration and a urine infection but we opted to take a chance and send her to hospital and will be eternally grateful to the caring staff on Birch ward . One of the ward doctors even went to personally find some food for her! My only grouse was the oppressive practice of asking if there was/should be a do not resuscitate (DNR) order put in place. I was asked this twice whilst she was being assessed in EAU. I can only assume that current medical training enforces the notion that the NHS will save money if it helps patients by not reviving them over a certain age. Who decides what constitutes a quality of life good enough to live? It doesn't seem the patient does....scary?
