My son was born 10 days early by emergency Caesarean at Torbay, after some close monitoring and very careful consideration by staff. During what was a difficult and anxious experience, staff remained very calm and took the time to explain what they were doing and why, with each individual letting me know what their role was. I also received a visit from the consultant the following evening to check I was happy with the procedure and understood why it had been carried out. I received a lot of support on the maternity ward for two nights and then fantastic support and advice from staff at the Special Care Baby Unit, where we spent another two nights due to feeding issues. Each midwife and nurse took their time to help with medical and emotional needs, no matter what time of day or night and they clearly cared about how we were doing. This part of the ward was also a little more quiet and calm. Clean bedding, towels and regular meals were freely available. It seems astonishing that we can receive this kind of service for free, especially when it is so willingly given and with such care. These staff should surely be more highly recognised and fairly remunerated for the work they do! I would be interested in making a donation towards the SCBU, is this possible or would it be done through the Torbay League of Friends?
"fantastic service on labour ward, maternity ward..."
