"Felt like I was a waste of time"

About: Nevill Hall Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

Whilst at work of an evening at boarding kennels I was bitten badly on the face by a dog. I was the only staff member that day so had to wait until after work to go to A&E.

I finally got to hospital in the evening with my husband, and saw a nurse quite quickly. I was in a lot of pain and still bleeding, and I thought maybe the dog had chipped my jaw. However I then had to wait over 4 hours in a nearly empty waiting room, and I had been seen by 6 people that had come in after me get seen and go home. There was a sign in the waiting room that said "please do not eat or drink until you have been seen by a doctor" and as I hadn't eaten since lunch I was shaking with hunger.

After 4 hours I was in tears when I was finally called in. A member of staff pointed into a cubicle and just said "go in there". The bed hadn't even even made so I was told I had to wait until someone came over to put a sheet on it. I was then made to feel stupid about crying, and the doctor laughed in my face when I said I hadn't eaten anything since lunch, even after I tried to explain the sign. They said I was being silly. The cheek.

They then poked my face and said I needed a booster tetanus and some antibiotics and left the cubicle. They didn't even clean the wound or give me bandages. Another member of staff then came in with the antibiotics, explained them and showed us where the door was. We had to tell them that I needed a jab, it was the first he'd heard of it. He left and another completely different doctor came in to give me the jab. They left without a word and we sat in the cubicle for 10 minutes before we decided to go and ask someone if that was it and went home.

My wound is now badly infected and I'm still in agony.

I am disgusted by the treatment I received and now don't want ever to go back.
