"This hospital opened 12 months to early"

About: Southmead Hospital

As an inpatient for some months, we regularly (twice weekly) experienced not enough food being sent to the wards, inappropriate foods being sent to the gastro wards. Not enough, or no bandages for patience recovering from surgery. Patient’s relatives asked to bring medivation from home as the hospital had no stock. Individual rooms soon became nick named solitary confinement. On the issue of medication, it could take up to four hours after asking for pain relief, one nurse used this as a form of control and refused to provide pain relief medication. If attending an outpatient’s appointment, you need to arrive at least an hour before hand in the hope you can find somewhere to park. As to the building, well the construction crews were still building the hospital. But if you look carefully you will notice the slate tiles are already starting to split both horizontally and vertically. In the patience rooms on the wards the following issues occurred: toilets out of use for weeks at a time, the wet room flooring was not installed correctly, so those who used the showers were unwittingly sending the used shower water to the patient’s in the ward’s below (TIP: if you have to go into the hospital as a patient, try to get on the top floor). There is a lot more, but not enough space here.

Dear Ian – I am sorry that you have experienced and witnessed problems with the food, and that some basic supplies and medications were not immediately available. I am also sorry that you have experience problems with parking. All the issues you mentioned are being addressed and arise from the adjustment of working practices and processes necessary following the transfer of staff and services into the new building. Despite extensive planning it was always anticipated that a settling period of several months would be needed to refine and polish the services. The relatively few issues with the building are being addressed and the parking will be improved once space is created for a new patient multi-story car park adjacent to the new Brunel Building entrance. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to post details of your experience. Your feedback has been shared with the appropriate departments. Kind regards – Steve Sykes Advice and Complaints Team
