"Upset over misdiagnosis in neonatal intensive care"
Posted by K. (as ),
My niece was born in Burnley Hospital and was then sent to NICU (neonatal intensive care) a day later as she had low sugar levels.
After tests and checks the doctor said she had a hole in her heart and even drew a picture to show what was wrong, where the arteries should be and where they should not be. The doctor said she would require surgery.
The whole family were very upset about this - baby was transfered over to St Marys in Manchester. They did their tests and said she had no problems with her heart at all. They said all babies, especially those who are premature, have holes in the heart which close as they grow.
I cannot belive a Neonatal Intensive care department doctor can make such a big mistake in diagnosis, in fact he also said she could have Down's syndrome, which she has not got either. But that was ok, as he said "could have". With the hole in her heart he said as though she did have it for sure
The doctor needs to be checked. I feel the nurses knew more than the doctor did.
