About: Darent Valley Hospital

My father 85yrs was sent from the Sapphire unit Gravesham as worried about DVT swelling in foot & knee was left to sit in your hospital wheel chair for 4hrs after 2hrs aked if he could have a trolley or somewhere to lay down as he was feeling very uncomfortable & in discomfort was told they would sort something out never did !! Dad has a cathater fitted became full i asked for it to be emptied was told in 5min had to go back and ask again and insisted it was done as dad as very uncomfortable when eventually did see doctor he said not enough had been taken and needed to do again which ment another 3/ 4hours wait he also asked why i had brought him in i said his notes if he had read them will tell you he was refered by a doctor from sapphire unit !! and came by ambulance ! he deciced dad could go back to sapphire and he would ring results through to them we then were put in short stay unit to wait for transport back for dad which was another 2hrs if i had not asked for nurse to chase up would of been god knows when !! My concerns are for elderly person coming to A&E and no family to speak up for them as i have seen the none care to elderly in A&E !! MY father is diabetic , heart condition & more and the nurses wrent interested or the 2 i spoke to certainly shouldnt be in a caring profession !!

Dear Jacqui We were saddened to hear of your father’s poor experience in our A&E Department and wish to offer him our apologies. Unfortunately A&E Departments can be extremely busy environments and experiencing delays can occur especially if emergency patients need to take priority. We are sorry that he was not offered a trolley to lay on rather than the chair in which he was sitting. With regards to the transporting back to Sapphire Unit, this would have been done by the Patient Transport Service which is not run by the hospital but by NCL and we would have no control over their wait times but we will raise with them your concern that he had to wait 2 hours. Kind regards The Communication Team Darent Valley Hospital
