"Millbrook Adult Mental Health Unit, Mansfield"

About: Millbrook Mental Health Unit

(as the patient),

Patient felt ignored most of the time as both HCAs and nurses were too busy to deal with their needs. Patient felt very unimportant and felt that there was a lack of empathy and care shown towards the patient.

On one occasion the patient was trying to relax and take their mind off a severe bout of anxiety and took 3 or 4 showers in one morning during their stay in Millbrook and was told by staff in the ward that it was unacceptable to do so!

The patient was very upset by the attitude and felt that staff lacked compassion and understanding of basic needs.

On a separate occasion a staff member shouted at the patient because the patient was about to enter a lounge where the patient had been listening to music to relax and take their mind off intrusive thoughts. However, due to lack of space on the ward during the weekly ward round from psychiatrists the room was in use. So when the patient returned they were again reprimanded by a staff member and was not allowed to enter the room. There was a lack of space when visitors came to see patients and patients are encouraged not to stay in their rooms during the day. The patient felt that staff should have explained that the room was being used for Ward round and that a notice should be placed on the door whilst Ward Round was in progress.

Hi Autumn Leaves,

I work on Lucy Wade Unit which is one of the wards based at Millbrook.

Firstly I wanted to thank you for taking the time to write about your experiences, it is important for us to hear about these.

You idea about a notice informing people ward round is in progress is a good one. I will discuss this with the team today and see about getting this implemented.

I am very sorry to see that you felt the attitude of staff did not show you compassion or understanding and would like to invite you to make contact with myself or Kirsty Aveyard to discuss this further: 0115 9560856

Thank you

Jo

To update from my last reply:

As a result of this and other comments we are taking part in a project to improve the ward round experience for all.

The information regarding ward rounds that currently take place have now been included within the welcome packs and carers information so I hope that this makes it clearer how these are held.

Thanks

Jo
