"Diabetic Dad left to go hypo and wet bed - Northwick Park Hospital"

My father was admitted to Northwick Park Hospital Harrow in Feb for a total hip replacement. At 3am, the night after the operation, I was awoken by my phone ringing. It was my father in a confused state asking me to take him home, as he hadn’t eaten all day and had asked for a cup of tea because his blood sugar was going low. I phoned the ward and spoke to the staff nurse on duty that night and she told me he was not the only patient on the ward and he had to wait. I told her his blood sugar was dangerously low and he needed to eat something before he fell into a coma. She told he she had checked his sugar and it was fine. However, I later found out that was untrue.

My sister and I were so concerned that we went to the hospital that night. We spoke to a doctor in A&E and requested he go and check on my father, as we were afraid he would slip into a coma. A few hours later, I called the ward and spoke to the day staff on the ward who said that my father had broke 'protocol' by calling me and requesting help. The service was disgusting and the nurses who dealt with us were rude and obnoxious. My father told me that he had requested help to go to the loo and was told to do it in his bed as there were no staff, this is how he lay until the sheets were changed a few hours later. I stayed by my father for the three days that he was in hospital and can say it was the most distressing and stressful time. I can honestly say I feared for his safety, not from other patients, but from the nurses lack of care and attention. The tea lady who came around helped my father getting up and moving than any of the nurses did. A truly terrifying time.
