"Nurses failing to respond to patient's needs"

About: Antrim Area Hospital

(as a relative),

I saw an elderly patient who had diabetes (and infectious diarrhoea) ask to use the commode. The patient had been given her dinner just before this, she called for a nurse (at least 5 of whom were within hearing distance at the nurses station) for 15 minutes. Eventually a domestic answered her and called the nurse. Two nurses with poor attitudes 'assisted' the patient onto a commode, telling her that she was not the only patient on the ward, they closed the curtains around the patient, the commode and the dinner tray, and left the elderly patient sitting on the commode in front of her dinner. She was left for 20 minutes.

I have heard nurses and assistants swear, regularly 'tell off' patients, particularly if they are elderly and/or confused. I can also tell you what was wrong with every patient in the bay because the nursing staff don't appear to completely appreciate the meaning of confidentiality.
