"X-rays"

About: Purley War Memorial Hospital

On the NHS Choices web site it says the Minor Injury dept at Purley Hospital will deal with possible fractures. I attended with my son and was told that although there is a x-ray dept at Purley they cannot refer patients for an x-ray and that we would have to see our GP to get an x-ray referral. The whole point of this service is surely to streamline the patient pathway and reduce the number of unnecessary GP appointments. Now, with my son in pain, we have to obtain a GP appointment to get a referral to go back to Purley Hospital to have an x-ray. Of course, we could just turn up in A&E which would bequicker but far more costly to the NHS.

I am sorry to learn that you had a frustrating experience at the Minor Injuries Unit and thank you for taking the time to let us know.

The X-ray departments at Purley War Memorial Hospital and Croydon University Hospital both work on referrals from clinicians, to whom the results are sent for diagnostic purposes. The decision to change the status of the unit to a Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) was made by the Croydon Clinical Commissioning Group ( www.croydonccg.nhs.uk ) and the MIU is operated by AT Medics, a GP-led company. I have passed your feedback to AT Medics, but you can also contact them direct through www.atmedics.org.uk
