"poor treatment"

About: Lister Hospital

Yesterday I visited my granddad in the Strathmore wing and was very upset and stressed to find that his dressing on his toe had not been checked or changed for 3 days! His toe is gangrene and he is a diabetic and this needs to be checked and re dressed daily! We asked the staff when it was last changed and they didn't know! and then we asked when it is going to be changed...they came straight away to check it and called the doctor in too and then said how my granddad should have told them to re-dress it or spoken out sooner! This is really not good enough and my granddad should not have to tell them how and when to do their job! They have a duty of care to him and should be monitoring him every day and shouldn't need to be asked things like this! That is the reason he is in hospital after all! Also, one of the nurses made a joke and said 'that's men for you'! I wasn't impressed with that remark! I then asked, who is responsible for redressing his toe? the nurse replied with a couple of people it could be but wasn't really sure. I told them he shouldn't have to ask you to redress his toe and that it wasn't on and she agreed with me. I would also like to point out that he has already had one leg amputated and I believe this could have been prevented if everyone had worked a bit quicker in helping him and he wasn't always waiting around for appointments for so long etc! We are all afraid that he could end up losing this leg too. At the moment we are waiting to find out if they are going to remove his toe or if we are to wait for it to drop off on its own! I just hope they haven't/don't leave it too late this time as losing both legs would be the end of him...he would just give up I think! So overall, very poor treatment and lack of care and we have lost all faith in Lister Hospital! I just hope someone takes note of this message and can help my granddad asap, improve his care and prevent another limb from being removed by acting faster!

We're really sorry that your experience of the care provided by our colleagues at the Lister hospital has not been what you expected or wanted for your grandfather. We very much want to see what can be done to help, but we will need some more information from you - the simplest way to do this is to email us at generalenquiries.enh-tr@nhs.net so that we can get all of these important matters followed up and sorted for you both.
