"Breastfeeding Mother Given no respect"

About: Royal Shrewsbury Hospital

I was recently in hospital due to Pneumonia. My baby was 12 weeks old at the time and I am exclusively breastfeeding which was my personal choice. On admission I was advised my baby could stay with me so I could feed him so he stayed the night and we were put in a side room. The next day however we were told the management wanted the baby out of the hospital as if he was 10 weeks old we could be put under the maternity unit and if he was over 2 they could supply a child prof bed but as he didn't fall into these categories he had to leave. I refused as I was BF so I advised them I wold discharge myself. They would not allow me to do this as I was to ill to leave. They send someone who was the hospital Wards senior manager and basically told me to formula feed my child and allow my partner (who works 14 hrs a day) to take him. I refused so they tried to push me into allowing my OH to take baby and bring him back for meals ( a 12 week baby who is always hungry and 30 mins away). I refused again and they got very pushy with me. I felt trapped as they stood in front of the exit and wouldn't listen to my replies as they repeated their orders over and over. Eventually after around 20 mins they left and it was 4hrs later before they advised me I could stay with my baby one more day after they had agreement from the Hospital board. Now don't get me wrong I appreciate that babies are at risk in a hospital but their response attitude and pushy attitude towards me when I was ill, a new mum trying to do my best for my baby was disgusting. In the end I was in for 6 days and my partner had to stay on the room floor at night as the final way they agreed for my baby to stay. This is not the only terrible upsetting experience iv had. I would like to point out however the actual nurses were amazing it was management who were rude, pushy people. Hospital care is about caring..... the management needs a shake up and "people" training immediately.
