"Unhappy with my mum's final weeks of care at Pinderfields"

About: Pinderfields General Hospital / Colorectal surgery

(as a relative),

I cared for my Mum for 14 years. She was bright, mobile, continent, loved life and people, but at 93 she was denied access to treatment by the colorectal team at Pinderfields Hospital.

Not only was she denied access to an investigative laparotomy, she was denied access to palliation. She suffered dreadfully over 6 months, with 23 admissions in 24 weeks.

Her consultant was a very arrogant man, who did not seem to listen to the opinion of his other fellow professionals. Not only did he deny her access to surgical investigation and treatment but also he denied her access to palliation, he took her off morphine in the last week of her life and she was offered Panadol when she was actually vomiting faeces. Why? I think because we dared to complain.

I feel there is something very wrong at this hospital which condemns the elderly not only to death but also to pain.

The Trust is extremely concerned to note the most distressing experience described and we are keen to address the issues of concern directly with the family.

To this end we would urge them to contact Mr Paul Jepson, Patient Liaison Manager, on 01924 213684 or email paul.jepson@midyorks.nhs.uk in order that this may be progressed.
