After calling 111 on a Saturday I ended up visiting a Devon Doctors out of hours GP at the RD&E hospital. I was nervous about attending as I was vomiting but was reassured that I would be seen promptly.
I saw Dr Stanford who was brilliant. After taking a detailed history and examining me she gave me an injection to stop the vomiting. She discussed what the possible cause for my illness was and prescribed stronger painkillers and anti- emetics. She also arranged a blood test, promising to get back to me by 6 pm if the results were of concern. She didn't make me feel rushed and seemed genuinely concerned.
The nurse (Gill) who took the blood was also very kind and considerate. After taking the sample, seeing that I felt rough, she took me somewhere where I could lie down while waiting for a lift home. She fetched a blanket and tucked me in - it was real old School nursing - brilliant.
In the event I did get a call later in the day and ended up spending the night in hospital - a very different experience. I have never used an out of hours Dr before but this service really was excellent and I couldn't suggest any improvements.
