About: Royal Berkshire Hospital

There are three things wrong with this hospital: 1. The nurses seem to stop or block almost any access to doctors (even when the doctor tells you straight off "I'm available 24hours for you, if you have any questions" -- good luck trying to get through the nursing staff to get to that doctor)! Nurses in short seem to run the hospital, rather than the other way round. 2. If there are problems there is no real feedback that anything is done. Indeed the opposite is often the case. My son once got hit in the throat, while on a children's ward there. Did the nurses rush to help? No. They sat and told me there were no doctors available and that I should take him to A&E! I said that this should be reported in the accident book and they assured me that it was. But when I asked to see the record I was told it was "on line" and I couldn't! 3. Children's A&E claims to be' Autism aware' but on going into the A&E treatment area the very first thing the nurse said was, "Our toy section is closed because it's late". Adding that we were over in the opposite area to the toys. We were dealing with our other son, who was ill, and while the doctors asked questions and check him over this same nurse would continually interrupt with "Your son is playing with the toys. I told you he must be supervised". Perhaps I should have said that the nurse was doing a good job of doing that, but I didn't. Not specifically the hospital's problem but parking is almost non-existent and Reading Council (I'm told by several at the hospital) are ignoring this problem. The result is a solid traffic jams at peek times. The parking problem has been made worse since the closure of another hospital (Battle) in the town but with, of course, no increase in the parking available.

We are sorry that your visits to the paediatric department did not meet your expectations. Whenever possible the nursing staff arrange for parents to speak to the medical staff. Unfortunately, this cannot always be done in a timely manner because of the high demand for doctors on the wards and departments. The matron for the area is surprised to hear that the nurses in the A&E department did not allow your son to play with the toys and she will ask the manager to remind all of her staff that toys should be available at all times. It is difficult to comment on individual incidents without knowing the full story but the matron would be happy to discuss this with you if you would like to contact her via our PALS team - 0118 322 8338 or email talktous@royalberkshire.nhs.uk We do recognise that during peak periods, notably weekdays, the demand for parking across the site may exceed capacity. We try to actively promote alternative ways that patients, visitors and staff can travel to the hospital, whilst ensuring existing parking spaces are most appropriately allocated. While the Trust will endeavour to provide adequate on-site parking, it is sensitively acknowledged it may not be possible to fully satisfy this provision on every occasion.
