About: Darlington Memorial Hospital Darlington Memorial Hospital Darlington DL3 6HX
Ward 44. My mother-in-law had a do not resuscitate form filled in and signed by a doctor and when my sister-in-law queried it and said that her mother was totally compus mentis she was told that it was procedure at that hospital. During a very hot spell of weather, a lady with dementia was given her food and drinks on her table but it was left out of her reach, later someone came around to clear things away and asked if she wasn't hungry today! Without the help of the patients and visitors on the ward this patient would have become severely dehydrated, thankfully someone on the ward was capable of showing some compassion. Later she tried to catch the nurses eye as she needed the toilet and was told she would have to ring the bell, which was out of reach and she didn't know what it was anyhow. Finally after I had rung for her, a nurse came who couldn't be bothered to help her out of her chair, after a while she did finally help her but there was no caring or empathy shown to her. I needed to speak to the nurses and went down to their station, where I was stopped from speaking by a raised hand and then had to listen to two minutes of chatter about nothing (it certainly wasn't work related) until they saw fit to hear what I wanted. i hope i don't need to spend anytime in hospital, the caring nurse doesn't seem to exist anymore, form filling has taken over.
