I recently had cause to take my 18 year old son to the walk in centre. He was 4 days into taking antibiotics for tonsillitis but by the Sunday was unable to open his mouth more than 1cm or speak properly and was in terrible pain. The doctor barely took a look and dismissed us on the basis that we had not allowed the antibiotics long enough to work. When I queried that my son had had tonsillitis before and this had never happened previously and could he have another separate infection he offered to look in his ear 'if we really wanted him to'! We left feeling that we had wasted the doctors time and I even (regretfully now) told my son to man up and get on with it. Three days later at the end of the course of antibiotics and still no better I returned to the GP with my son, to be told the tonsillitis had in fact progressed to a quinsy (abscess in the throat) and was now a medical emergency. We were sent straight to Wythenshawe hospital where an ENT specialist had to drain the abscess 3 times and my son had to stay in a couple of days on a steroid and antibiotic drip. The doctor was amazed that my son had been in this condition for 4 days since the weekend. I felt terribly guilty that I had doubted my son following the doctor's 'advice' at Trafford walk-in centre, and extremely annoyed that a lot of pain and further medical intervention could have been avoided had he conducted a proper examination. My past experience of services at Trafford Hospital have been excellent but I would be reluctant to return to the walk-in centre.
