"Support with breast feeding "

About: East Surrey Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

After corrective nipple surgery I was aware that it was unlikely that I would be able to breast feed. When I fell pregnant I had a desperate desire to breast feed.

My community midwife put me in touch with the breast feeding experts at East Surrey hospital and I met with Lexie during my pregnancy to discuss my options. She supported me, did not judge me on the surgery and made me feel positive about my options. We put a date in the diary towards the end of my pregnancy where she showed me how to hand express to see if I produced any colostrum and gave me a scheduled plan to hand express at home.

As it happens when my baby arrived I did produce milk but would not come out due to milk ducts being cut in surgery. Lexie came in on her day off to see me in hospital and made me a feeding supplement which meant I could have my baby to my breast but fed through formula through a small tube inserted in the side of her mouth. I cannot tell you how happy it made me feel as breast feeding is not just about the milk but about skin to skin contact and closeness with your baby. She informed the ward of my situation and asked them to support me going forward.

We have since kept in touch and Lexie has been an amazing support full of advice and knowledge. I can't thank her enough. She made what I thought was the impossible possible! Thanks Lexie!

Dear Sally123

Thank you for taking the time to post such a positive comment. Reading about how Lexie's contribution made such a difference to your experience as a new mum, is so lovely to read - and indeed, very touching. I will make sure that I pass on your feedback to Lexie and the Maternity team; I'm sure they will be delighted.

Kind regards
