About: North Middlesex Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

The nursers were friendly in the eyecare unit.

What could be improved

The doctor and receptionists could have more training on common medical conditions. I went to the main reception with a complaint of dehydration that was manifested by a little bit of light-headedness and swollen eyelids. I was hoping to see a doctor to verify the extent of my dehydration and for a recommendation on treatment. The receptionist then sent me to the eyecare unit (where I assume dehydration is not commonly treated) and there was told by the doctor on duty that swollen eyelids is not a symptom of dehydration. The doctor then proceeded to check my eyes, and told me I was fine and was free to go. Not satisfied with his lack of explanation, I did some internet research. After doing some more research, I went to a private hospital where the doctor took some urine tests and diagnosed me with dehydration. In agreement with the research I did online, the private doctor told me that dehydration can in fact cause swollen eyes. Why the NHS doctor would disagree on an apparently well-known and well-documented fact is beyond me. I ended up wasting about 4 hours of my day to be given the wrong diagnosis. In fact, I was given no diagnosis at all as the doctor could not explain why eyelids would swell. I would not recommend this hospital to anyone.
