"Gastrointestinal wards - wonderful staff"

About: Manchester Royal Infirmary

My husband has been an inpatient several times in MRI for different ailments. He is 88 and on the whole, he has been treated with dignity, respect and professionalism. The service from doctors, nursing staff and auxiliaries has been great while the latest technology and the operations he has had have been amazingly good. The MRI could obviously benefit from more nursing staff who are usually rushed off their feet; it would be strange if they didn't occasionally forget things in such a stressful job. The only criticism I have is the lack of communication between consultants and patients; hard to get hold of a consultant and even harder to get them to talk to patient's families. The main horror of the MRI is those awful, awful meals. The hospital board should be forced to eat them every day for a month; they would soon revert to having their own kitchens producing a limited menu of freshly cooked food. At present, there is nothing fresh, the salads are old and crumpled. Everything else is covered in wheaty sauces/gravies to make them microwavable. Bad news for people with wheat intolerances. Certainly not tempting to my husband whose appetite is poor to start with. A big downer from such an outstanding hospital.

Thank you for your comments posted on the Patient Opinion website regarding your husband’s care in the Gastrointestinal Ward of the Manchester Royal Infirmary. It was very kind of you to write and compliment the staff as it is good to receive positive feedback which reflects their hard work and dedication. It was reassuring to hear that you thought that the staff treated your husband with dignity, respect, and professionalism.

We are sorry to learn that your experience was not as positive as we would hope in respect of other aspects of your husband’s care. We are particularly concerned to read that you felt communication with medical staff was poor and that the food is poor. It is important to us that comments are heard and seen as an opportunity provided to the service to make changes and improvements wherever possible.

In response to your comment, I can tell you that your concerns have been raised directly with the staff / department involved so that they can look into them so that others don’t experience the same issues as you did.

It is difficult to respond to all the posts in a full way often because of a lack of detailed information, therefore if you would like to discuss this with us in more detail, please feel free to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 0161 276 8686 or by e-mailing pals@cmft.nhs.uk
