"Concerns over general well being of patients"

About: Southmead Hospital

I came in with my partener . as soon as I walked into A&E it was dirty! Filthy floors , food wrappers and drink bottles on the floor , seats where dirty. Then when we were seen by a doctor the door was left open, so everyone in that area could hear and see into the room and I could also hear convocations about a patient in their care from the police. I have also seen on TV that the hospital is struggling to provide care to people who need it. I feel the NHS have messed up by closing frenchay . I have expressed my concerns with people close to me and friends who have entered the hospital and have also expressed their concerns.

Dear Anonymous – thank you for taking the time and trouble to post your feedback. I am sorry that you found the A&E department dirty. The environment is very busy and it is disappointing that some visitors do not consider other patients by helping to keep the area clean and tidy by using the bins and other facilities provided. A&E is cleaned regularly, but I have fed your comments back to the managers concerned to see if the currently cleaning rota needs to be changed. I also apologise that patient confidentiality was not respected. Regrettably Frenchay could not be kept open, to allow a gradual work-up of the services at Southmead due to funding. The press have reported on a number of issues following the moved to the new Brunel building. The project was one of the largest in the NHS for a number of years and although extensive planning was undertaken, we anticipated that settling in problems would arise given the scope of the changes in infrastructure and that it would take time for staff and processes to adjust. Please be assured that patient safety has always been our prime consideration, and the Trust is one of the first 12 NHS organisations in England to sign up to a three-year Government-led campaign that aims to make the NHS the safest healthcare system in the world. It is also true that we have received many compliments from patients who have found the new facilities and related care to be first class, but regrettably this is not as newsworthy. I hope this helps reassure about Southmead Hospital services. Kind Regards – Steve Sykes Advice and Complaints Team
