"Why is the A&E Dept. understaffed?"

About: Chesterfield Royal Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

Why does it seems that the A and E Dept. at Chesterfield Royal is always understaffed? I fractured my left arm in several places and spent 4 hours in the A and E department, even though there were only about a dozen patients waiting to be seen. If people are in severe pain, is this acceptable?

Thank you for your post. I hope you're recovering and that whilst in ED you were offered pain relief straight away? The national target for ED is that patients are seen, and a decision to treat, admit or discharge made within a four hour maximum. It sounds as though this was met in your case? There are two sides to ED - one of which most patients don't see. Sometimes that's where staff are concentrated and it's the area where the resus rooms are - and where patients with life critical injuries are bring cared for. Our latest staffing assessment (we do these for all wards and departments once a month) indicates ED has safe staffing levels but I'm sorry if you felt this was not the case when you visited for what sounds like a nasty injury.
