"Hospital Feedback"

About: Nuffield Health, Plymouth Hospital

I was contacted my Nuffield hospital last week by letter, after being refereed from Derriford hospital for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Got my appointment letter and everything was running smoothly. I then received a telephone call from the hospital regarding a pre medical history check before I came for treatment. If was this conversation that left me angry. Once I mentioned to the lady I was on tablets for depression and for IBS, her tone changed and told me it was no longer possible to treat me straight away and would have to be referred back to Derriford. Since this incident I have now been given an appointment at Derriford for the end of November which is a much longer waiting time, as I was going to be seen in Nuffield next week. Is this normal behaviour from Nuffield?

Response from Nuffield Health, Plymouth Hospital

Dear Sir / Madam I am sorry that you are not happy with the results of your pre-assessment medical checks. As a small hospital, we are not able to deal with some complex patients and our pre-assessment checks are designed to protect the safety of all of our patients. I suspect that your medical history has indicated that you would possibly be a higher risk patient with regards to your surgical and anaesthetic needs and for this reason, with your safety in mind, we would have made the referral to Derriford Hospital. If you would like for me to investigate this in more detail, please write directly to me at Nuffield Health, Plymouth Hospital. Once again, I am sorry to hear that you are not happy with the decision to refer you to Derriford, but I hope my response helps you to better understand our decision. Kind regards, David Houghton, Hospital Director
