I was diagnosed out of the blue with a brain tumour on 28th July after a CT scan that morning after suffering from headaches and loss of balance. I was put on a call back list for St George's and was given an appointment with my registrar on Friday 1st August, and had the surgery on Monday 4th. Everything happened so quickly there was barely any time for paperwork to be generated, but I felt that my case was dealt with extremely efficiently. The registrar was utterly professional when laying out the risks and the obvious unknowns with brain surgery, but I felt in incredibly safe and capable hands. Both my registrar and surgeon were personable and attentive throughout my hospital stay, and I felt they went out of their way to put me at ease and follow through on things, although they were only doing their jobs. Everybody on Brodie and Mckissock wards, and in intensive care, were caring and very calm. I don't know how the nurses manage such long shifts when understaffed (as they were on one of the days I was in) and still be smiling by the end of it, but somehow they do! The cleanliness couldn't have been better and I enjoyed the food despite the horror stories you hear! There is also a big sun terrace which was really lovely, and I know my family were grateful to be able to get some fresh air while they waited through my surgery. Although not a nice period for me, I felt that it couldn't have gone more smoothly overall. I feel very lucky to have St George's as my local hospital.
