"Poor care at Wythenshawe Hospital scan"

About: Wythenshawe Hospital / General surgery

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I had a mastectomy to remove one breast at Wythenshawe Hospital recently. Some weeks later, I went back to have a CT scan at the hospital. It was a young female staff member that did it.

The first problem having this scan was that I couldn’t get up onto the equipment because I’m small. The young woman brought me a cushion to stand on to help me get up and I nearly fell off it. She said a stool wasn’t available.

I finally got on the machine but it was a struggle and I couldn’t get comfortable. I was trying to get comfie when I realised that the woman had put a tourniquet on my arm and it was the same side of my body where I’d had my breast removed. You’re not supposed to do this; you’re supposed to ask which side of the body the breast removal was from and use the other arm. When I realised she’d put it on that arm I screamed out loud and she took it off straight away. I told her she should’ve asked.

When I left the hospital after the scan I noticed a massive lump on my arm where she’d put the tourniquet. I had that lump for a month and it was so painful. Later, I told my cancer nurse & physiotherapist about what happened and they saw the lump.

A while later, I received a feedback form in the post from the hospital about my experiences. I filled it in, commenting that I’d been happy with all my treatment except for this scan. I never heard anything back after this and I was a bit surprised. Why do they bother to ask for comments and then not get back to you?
