About: Southmead Hospital

My wife had cause to be admitted to this hospital and the doctors and nursing staff were excellent, couldn't have asked for better but the cleanliness of the room she stayed in was very poor in deed the room itself looked ok and on each visit I made to my wife she said the toilet area smelt. The window had some thing a bit distasteful smudged on it and the bathroom/toilet. Well third world country would be a good description, it smelt awful, the floor in the shower area was dirty. The drain plug was some what blocked, so if she had taken a shower it would have flooded the whole room and the worst bit was the support hand rail by the toilet smeared in what could only be described as very unpleasant and this was the cause of the bad smell. The cleaning staff are letting you down big time. I didn't find out the cause of the problem until the day I collected my wife to come home but if I had found out before the nursing staff would have been made aware of the shockingly poor standards of your cleaning staff. I wanted to take pictures but my wife said not to.

Dear Michael – thank you for your feedback. Firstly I am pleased to learn that your wife received excellent care I hope that she is now fully recovered. It is absolutely unacceptable that her room and particularly the ensuite bathroom area was not cleaned to the highest standards. I cannot explain why this was not done. You do not say where your wife was staying in the hospital, but I have fed back your comments to all areas for attention. You may be pleased to learn that regular independent Matron led spot checks are now being undertaken to ensure that the highest standards of cleanliness and safety are being maintained and North Bristol NHS Trust is one of the first 12 NHS organisations in England to sign up to a three-year Government-led campaign that aims to make the NHS the safest healthcare system in the world. I am grateful for you taking the time and trouble to post your comments. Kind Regards – Steve Sykes Advice and Complaints Team
