Re Jed Bye Surgery for removal of dermoid cyst on 27/06/2014 I am very grateful to the staff on the paediatric day care unit , theatre staff and the doctor for the excellent care we were given throughout the stay. The paediatirc unit was bright , clean and welcoming, with excellent facilities. The staff on the ward and theatre staff were cheerful , reassuring , very kind, happy and attentive. As parents we were welcomed and involved in the care and very well informed about all the steps. I would like to extend my thanks to the paediatirc team , the doctor and the theatre staff for restoring my faith in GRH. I have had previous experiences at GRH with myself in day care surgery and 2 elderly parents over the past 10 years and was far from happy in each instance. There is certainly a difference in being in the new unit not the Tower Block. I still observed that there is considerable distress for patients and relatives with the problems accessing wards in the Tower Block at visiting times. The elderly and disabled struggle to get into the lifts and have to cut short their visits because of access problems. Although I am very relieved this was not the case in my visit this time it brought back distressing memories of last year when my terminally ill mother was in the Tower Block. I know from personal experience that I was denied access to care for my mother. I worked in the Tower block for a few weeks and I know that attitudes towards family are not always welcoming. I hope the quality of service that we had in paediartic day care can be replicated in other departments in the future.
