"A&E Visit"

I have had to unfortunately visit the manor a&e department on a number of occasions over the last 12 months. one or two of the nurses have previously been rude however i have never had any doctor be rude or uncaring. On sat 2nd august my husband took me in as i was suffering with severe abdo pain. I was in excrutiating pain so the reception staff told me to go in through the double doors and turn right which i did. I was met by a nurse who shouted "you had better calm down because were busy so you will not be seen for 3.5 hours by a doctor"! I said i need pain relief and she ignored me and told me to sit in a small office to the left of the double doors and someone would see me. I was crying in agony but still ignored by the many nurses who walked past. What felt like a long time later i was seen by a nurse who checked my blood pressure, took a few details and then told me to sit in another waiting room - in that waiting room were a number of patients close to a nurses changing room. I was keeling over in pain and eventually a nurse or hca who had been walking in and out said she would get someone to help me. Sometime later, still no pain relief, i was taken to a cubicle and left. I again asked for pain relief and was given a tramadol and told "see how this works". I informed the staff that i had endo stage 4 and tramadol does not help as i had this at home. I was ignored and left. I eventually got up and saw a male nurse walking past my cubicle who i asked for help. He was fantastic. He informed me he would speak to the doctor and get morphine. I had this administered and a while later the doctor came in. He informed me the pain was due to my endo (which i knew) and as i had had morphine he was discharging me. I told him i was still in pain even after the morphine but he went onto say "i've given morphine and there is nothing more i can do unless you want me to overdose you"! I was disgusted in his attitude and i stated i did not appreciate what he had just said. He said well there is nothing more i can do and instructed the nurse to remove the needle from my hand which was done. I felt ill so i informed the nurse i would not be leaving as i was still in unbearable pain - she informed the doctor. We ended up having words and i confirmed to him i felt i was not well enough to be discharged as i would have to come back - this eventually resulted in him saying he would refer me to the gynae ward. He did however apologise for his earlier comment and quickly came back to reinsert the needle in my hand before referral. I must add Ward 23 offered the best care from arrival. The consultant saw me within 15 mins and administered oramorph which helped settle the pain. I was kept in overnight and discharged on sun evening - the nurses on ward 23 were fantastic too. Shame about some of the A&E staff who bring down the hard work of the rest of the A&E dept.
