"Disappointing handling of my case"

About: Southmead Hospital

I went to the urology department in Southmead as I presented with a 20 year history of bladder problems. I was expecting the consultant to do everything in his capacity to find out why I have such problems but despite me presenting a bladder diary I received a letter regarding the ultrasound which made my 20 years of bladder problems pale in comparison to the 2 days of records of my bladder diary. Where is the comparison?? I have had this problem for 20 years and oh it was all because I wasn't going often enough! I do not like being educated to train my bladder, I'm sorry, I don't accept the outcome of this at all. Just because my ultrasound was normal doesn't mean everything is normal. Could it not be a neurological problem? Possibly. Was this suggested or investigated? No. Even when I do empty my bladder nothing comes out. So how is it anything to do with me? If I don't feel the urge to go there is a problem. Very very disappointed. I feel as though my symptoms and 20 year history of bladder problems has just been shrugged off as if they are nothing.

Response from Southmead Hospital

Dear Jo – thank you for your feedback. I cannot comment on your assessment or diagnosis for obvious reasons. However, as you are clearly unhappy with your care plan I would urge you to discuss this with your consultant, or ask your GP for a re-referral to facilitate this. Clearly the clinical team should have been able to communicate which the particular tests were appropriate, and what the possible results might indicate to give you some confidence in the treatment path and I apologise if this did not happen. I would like to thank you for taking the time and trouble to post your views. I hope that your condition improves. Kind Regards – Steve Sykes Advice and Complaints Team
