"Some very nice staff, some uncaring staff"

About: Lorn & Islands Hospital / General Medicine

(as the patient),

I have been to this [oban] hospital 4 times for major-ish issues, I’m still not sure what to think of the hospital.

A few days ago I was in hospital for minor operation. I was put in a side ward where I was on my own for two days. On the third day at 7: 00 am a student nurse came and started to move my belongings. I was told I was being moved to the main ward – no explanation was given, I was just told that I needed to get ready to be moved. The nurse’s attitude was cold and off hand, I was thrown into the melee and chucked out.

Later that day my wound was dressed but the plaster they used was bigger than the area that had been prepared for surgery and stuck to body hair making it painful every time I moved. In the end I had to take part of the plaster off – pulling our hair in the process and cut it down to size. This should have been done by the nurses.

Another issue is that I was given dihydrochloride which should be taken during or after a meal but I was given this on an empty stomach. Although a number of factors could have had an impact I think taking these tablets on an empty stomach has caused problems.

I also had a cannula inserted in the back of my hand which kept catching on the bed sheets and was very uncomfortable. I asked if it could be taped over so that it would not keep catching but nothing was done about this.

I felt that there are some people at the hospital who are very nice and they care but there are others who are just not caring, I wondered if it was the way in which different people have been trained.

All the doctors are very good – there was a junior doctor who was particularly good while I was there.

I wonder they don’t have Matrons anymore like they did years ago – they were a bit more removed from the staff so it was easier for them to pull up staff who needed to be told. I feel Sisters can be a very pally with their staff and so more difficult to pull staff up.

Dear Kite695

Thank you for taking the time to make this posting and I offer sincere apologies for the time it’s taken to respond to you.

I am really sorry that the experience you had at the Lorn & Isles Hospital left you feeling that the care you received fell short of being satisfactory. We need to do everything we can to learn from your experience but in order to do this it would be really helpful if we could speak to you in more detail so we can specifically tackle each issue you highlight in turn.

With this in mind, would you be willing to help us improve the way we care for our patients? Your feedback is so important to us, without it we would be unaware of how you were treated or indeed other patients on the ward.

I have shared your experience with Veronica Kennedy, Locality Manager and she would really welcome the opportunity to talk to you about this in more detail. If you would like to take up this offer, please contact Veronica directly by email veronica.kennedy@nhs.net or telephone 01631 788942. Alternatively, you can contact me by email caroline.cecil@nhs.net or telephone 01546 605680.

I am very grateful that you have taken the time to share your experience on Patient Opinion. We do hope you get in contact with us, this will give us an opportunity to look into the matter for you and demonstrate that patient feedback can and does result in positive changes in the way we provide services.

Caroline
